It wasn't long until the Americans have taken all of Nuevo Pariso in Mexico. Escalera was lost and so was the great fort El Presidio. The Americans were running short on troops and had limited ammo to hold the fort, however they used cannons to hold off the Mexican infantry army. Captain Cordova had finally arrived to Nuevo Pariso to join the assault against the Americans. The only thing in the air was cannon fire and gatling gun bullets, along with Mexican blood. A charge was sent to the front gates but all were massacred due to the Gatling gun and cannons at the front gates. The Charge did not stand a chance. Soldiers died left and right, including American soldiers that got shot off their posts. Dynamite was thrown over and into the fort and only the screams of the American soldiers were heard. A hole was blown on a wall so Mexican troops could climb over but they easily got shot down by the soldiers defending it. Eventually the numbers started to dwindle and ammo was scarce. Cordova commanded a squad of 8 soldiers to be sent to flank the right side of the fort but just before they were on their way, a cannon ball came down and completely killed 7 out of 8 men in that squad.
Cordova's father, Colonel Juan Cordova, was leading the assault and had finally surrounded the fort. The surrounding troops shot down American troops that were stationed on cannons and Gatling guns. It was too risky to get on cannons. The Americans were soon to be defeated until the Sons of Liberty saddled up and got on their horses. They came out of the back entrance and completely disorganized the troops that were on the field. Soldiers getting run over and shot by rifles and revolvers while trying to dodge cannon fire. The Mexican army were scattered. Many Sons of Liberty members died but it could not compare to the death tolls of Mexicans. Captain Cordova saw what was happening and sent a runner to deliver the message of the situation to his father.
Once his father received the news, he remained idle and gave no orders. The colonel's only sense of action was to look towards his son and smile.... A cannon ball came down on his position.... Nothing was left.. Captain Cordova was left with tears and sorrow and a dying wish to fight. The Lieutenant Colonel, however, ordered a retreat due to the loss of many men. Cordova refused and continued to fight. If that one soldier did not pull him back away from the battle, he may have died... During the retreat, Cordova saw the face of one of Sons of Liberty member and he will never forget that face. The Americans claimed the victory and installed liberty in Mexico.
